When I hear somebody sigh, "Life is hard", I am always
tempted to ask, "Compared to what?" - Sydney Harris
In September of 2005, Hurricane Katrina hit the states of Louisiana, Alabama
and Florida with a mighty blow. The lack of preparation for a disaster of this magnitude was probably the biggest factor between
life and death. Hundreds of thousands were left without homes, jobs and the most basic human necessities needed for survival.
In filmmaking, lack of pre-production will make or break a project.
Fortunately, your life doesn't have to depend upon it. That's why we
felt a film festival was a great way to raise money for the victims of Hurricane Katrina & Rita. It's dual purpose
is to raise money for the victims and motivate movie makers to do what they love most-make movies!
Why?:
For months and probably years, thousands
of victims, their families and those that helped them will be stretched beyond their means emotionally, physically and
monetarily. And many independent filmmakers, as artists, know poverty all to well, hence the phrase, "starving artists".
When moviemakers submit their fees to compete, the majority of the money (after production costs)
will be donated to provide, food, water, shelter and help reshape lives. We will attempt to give filmmakers the opportunity
to choose from a number of relief organizations they would want their submission fees sent to such as the American
Red Cross and the Salvation Army to name a few.
